Fernwood Studio is owned and operated by Kyla Ulrich.
Kyla is an illustrator and graphic designer with a BFA in Illustration. She has been working professionally for over 10 years and currently lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband and pup.
Working primarily with watercolor and ink, she creates naturalist illustrations inspired by the life cycles of plants, animals, and fungi. Her work draws influence from 19th- and early 20th-century botanical illustration, as well as time spent exploring the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest. Through her art, she hopes to spark curiosity and encourage a deeper connection to the natural world.
Throughout the year, she regularly participate in markets. You can find her every Saturday at the Portland Saturday Market (at the waterfront), along with select appearances at the Crafty Wonderland Holiday Market, Renegade Seattle, Urban Craft Uprising, and Portland Night Market. Her work is also available at: Oblation Papers & Press, Backyard Bird Shop, Blind Insect Gallery, Bird Alliance of Oregon (formerly Portland Audubon), and more.
As a small business owner, supporting fellow local businesses is important to her, which is why all of her work is created and printed locally in Portland.
